Canada's Chess Champion Dies
Toronto, March 13—(CP)—J. Harry Belson, Canadian chess champion, died tonight after a lengthy illness. For years one of the Dominion front rank chess players, he won the title at last year's championship meet in Toronto over the biggest field in years. Mr. Belson, who was an automotive finance expert, had been ailing for some time. He was about 40 years of age.

Chess Champion Dies In Toronto
Toronto, March 14 (CP)—J. Harry Belson, Canadian chess champion, died Thursday night after a lengthy illness. For years one of the Dominion's front rank chess players, he won the title at last year's championship meet in Toronto over the biggest field in years.
Mr. Belson, who was an automotive finance expert, had been ailing for some time. He was about 40 years of age.
Mr. Belson had played in international tournaments at Chicago and Milwaukee and some years won a prize for brilliance in a special match against Santasiere, American chess master who held the open title at the time.
He was a native of Finland, coming to Canada with his parents while a child. He started playing chess while still a boy. He is the only player who has won the Toronto city title on seven occasions.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
