Byrne Leads Chess Event
BUENOS AIRES (AP)—Robert Byrne of New York, is the leader in the Master's Chess tourney after eight rounds of play. The American has 6½ points.
Byrne moved ahead by gaining a draw with Carlos Guimard of Argentina in 26 moves while Paul Keres of the Soviet Union, formerly tied with Byrne, lost to Alberto Foguelman, also of Argentina.
Foguelman's triumph was a surprise. It was his first victory in the tournament Keres dominated the start of their match but mid-game indecision with his pawns cost him heavily and he surrendered on the 50th move.

The South American Zonal Tournament, from which three players are to qualify for the next Interzonal Tournament, was held last month in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The result was a four way tie for first with scores of 12½-4½. The sensation of the event was that one of the four was 14-year-old Brazilian champion Henrique Da Costa Mecking.
The other winners, all Argentine veterans, were Julio Bolbochan, Alberto Foguelman and Oscar R. Panno. Two other Argentine masters, Raimundo Garcia and Samuel Schweber, tied with 10½-6½.

An excellent showing was mae by Alberto Foguelman of Argentina, who finished Just below the Soviet aces with 10-3. But for a loss to his compatriot Carlos Bielickl, Foguelman would have been at the top.
