Famous Chess Player Killed When Struck By Car
Allen Pearsall, Resident of Chula Vista for 34 Years; Buried in Glen Abbey.
Allen Pearsall, 70, of 96 I street who was killed instantly when struck by a car at the corner of Third avenue and I street on New Year's day, was interred in Glen Abbey Thursday, following services at the Hubbard mortuary chapel at ten o'clock. The Reverend Williston M. Ford officiated.
Mr. Pearsall, a native of New York, was a poultryman and had resided in Chula Vista 34 years. He is survived by a brother Thomas of New York. His mother, Eliza Pearsall, died here about four years ago. She was more than 90 years old.
The deceased belong to the Correspondence Chess league of America and was a member of the International Chess Olympiad, playing on the United States team. He was considered one of the top ten players among players by correspondence in the United States, participating at times in as many as 16 games simultaneously.
Mr. Pearsall, who was extremely deaf, was believed to have been returning from a chess game in San Diego when he was struck as he stepped from a street bus, by a car driven by C. B. Miller, 705 Twin Oaks.
