David Scheffer, 71
Former Boston tax lawyer
David M. Scheffer, a prominent defense lawyer in tax fraud cases and a former partner in the Boston law firm of Widett & Krueger, died of a stroke July 12 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Ore. He was 71.
Mr. Scheffer was a partner in the firm, now Widett, Slater & Goldman, in the 1960s and 1970s. Before going into private practice specializing in tax cases, he worked as a prosecutor for the Internal Revenue Service in Boston, New York and Omaha during the late 1940s and 1950s.
He retired last year from teaching tax law at Western State University's College of Law in Fullerton, Calif., and moved to Portland.
Born in Chicago, he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1938 and its law school in 1941. During World War II he rose from private to first lieutenant in the Army Quartermaster Corps.
Mr. Scheffer leaves a sister, Ruth Press of Portland.
