Dr. Joseph Platz, master emeritus of the U.S. Chess Federation, moves sharply Saturday against eight-year-old Daniel Webster of West Hartford in a match at the Whiton Memorial Library in Manchester. Platz and Connecticut state champion Eric Godin played matches with as many as eight players at once during the tournament. William Kloppenburg of Manchester, in photo at right, wears a bewildered look as he ponders his next move against Platz. There were no sore losers, though. Kloppenburg, who is 82, said chess wins hands-down over cards. “It's a lot more exciting than those silly card games,” he said. “It gets the grey matter to work.” Said Platz, “It's a science and an art.” Courant Photos by Judy Griesedieck
