Youth, 16, Captures City's Chess Crown
Checkmating opponents left and right, a teen-ager who likes mathematics won the chess championship of Rochester yesterday.
Edward Rosenthal, 16, a junior at Brighton High School, upset veteran players and became the youngest champion in the history of the tournament sponsored by the Rochester Chess Club.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Rosenthal, 296 Hemingway Dr., the new champion began playing chess only three years ago. He learned the game by “reading up on it in books.”
Young Rosenthal, according to his mother, is deeply interested in mathematics. In winning the chess championship, he dethroned a professional mathematician, Dr. Erich W. Marchand, 172 Winbourne Rd., who is employed at Eastman Kodak Co. Dr. Marchand had held the championship since 1956.
The final games in the two-week-long tournament were held yesterday at the Central YMCA. Rosenthal compiled nine out of a possible 11 points. Marchand was second with 7½ points, and another teenage newcomer to competitive play, Patrick Eberlein, 16, of 1350 Highland Ave., was third. One point was given for each victory and a half point for a draw.
Rosenthal last August won the New York State Experts Chess Tournament in Schenectady.
