Whitehall High Teacher Edwin M. Faust, Italy Casualty During World War II

The Morning Call, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Friday, November 05, 1943

Whitehall High Teacher Italy Casualty
Private Edwin M. Faust, peacetime teacher of German and Latin in Whitehall High school, suffered a severe contusion of his thigh when a German delayed-type road mine exploded near Naples, Italy.
According to a letter received yesterday by his wife, the former Virginia Felker, who moved from Fullerton, their former home, to be with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Felker, 16 E. Ettwein St., Bethlehem, the 28-year-old Army infantryman was on a truck traveling over the road when the mine exploded.
He received his wound Sept. 26. In yesterday's letter he told his wife that he had been awarded the Purple Heart medal and had been evacuated to one of the Army's general hospitals in North Africa. He told his wife, a nurse at St. Luke's hospital, that he was improving nicely under the attention he was receiving.
Inducted into service June 12, 1942, the former school teacher, on of the late Edwin and Helen (Walbach) Faust, after training at Fort Meade, Md., and Shenango, Pa., went overseas last July. He was in North Africa and moved into Italy after the Sicilian campaign.
In a letter dated Oct. 14, and received last week by his sister, Mrs. George Follweiler, 203 Chestnut St., Fullerton, whose husband is also in service, Private Faust said that he was evacuated on a hospital ship after receiving his injury. He spoke of the good meals, including a roast turkey dinner on Sunday, recreational facilities provided and the excellent treatment he received from the Army doctors and nurses.
In peacetime Faust had been named the 1940 successor to the late Harold E. Kuhns, who was the teacher in the Whitehall High school. Born in Fullerton, he was graduated from Whitehall in 1930, received a B. A. degree from Muhlenberg in 1934, active in the German society, romance, and classical fraternities, he took graduate work at Columbia university. He had been an employee of the Mack Mfg. Co. before getting his first teaching job at Miami Beach, Fla, later returning to Allentown to work again at Mack's until called to his teaching position at Whitehall.
He has a brother in service, Private James G., now at Fort Bliss, Tex.

'til the world understands why Robert J. Fischer criticised the U.S./British and Russian military industry imperial alliance and their own Israeli Apartheid. Sarah Wilkinson explains:

Bobby Fischer, First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
What a sad story Fischer was,” typed a racist, pro-imperialist colonial troll who supports mega-corporation entities over human rights, police state policies & white supremacy.
To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”. I think Mr. Fischer held out and fought the good fight, steadfast til the day he died, and may he Rest In Peace.
Educate yourself about U.S./State Laws --

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
