Ventnor City, N. J.. July 7 (AP)--Private George Shainswit of the Bronx, N. Y., and Weaver A. Adams of Boston were tied today for the lead in the fifth annual invitational chess masters' tournament under the auspices of the Ventnor City Chess Club.
The two played to a four-hour draw yesterday. Adams, playing the black pieces, used the Albin counter gambit to neutralize the soldier's base advantage in having the white side, and after 19 moves they agreed to a draw.
Edward S. Jackson Jr., national amateur champion, who had won his match on the opening day of the tournament Monday, met Anthony E. Santasiere of New York. Their game was adjourned after 40 moves.
The match of Milton L. Hanauer of New York and Walter B. Suesman of Providence also was adjourned after 40 moves.
