J. C. J. Wainwright was born at Birmingham, England, December 10, 1851. He came to this country at 17, and engaged in the trade of metal worker, and is today a prominent sheet metal contractor of New England. His chess career covers a period of 32 years, in which time about 500 problems have been constructed, covering practically every known theme, many of which originated with him. He is especially proficient in sui mate strategy. As a solver he made perfect scores in three important tourneys, and acted as judge in numerous international problem tourneys. He was one of the earliest American writers of chess stories. He is a brilliant conversationalist, genial and cheerful, and seems to possess the lost art of letter writing.
