Malcolm Sim, 75, Toronto Paper's Chess Editor Dies
Toronto (Special)—Malcolm Sim, 75, chess editor of the Toronto Telegram, died Sunday.
Born near London, England, Mr. Sim came to Canada in 1904. Educated in Britain, Mr. Sim intended to become an architect, but after completing his training in that profession ill health forced him to relinquish his ambitions.
Always interested in chess and checkers, Mr. Sim started studying the game seriously. What began as a hobby, rapidly became his life interest, and to the day of his death he kept up a voluminous correspondence with chess enthusiasts across the world.
He was Toronto champion, Canadian correspondence champion and on eight occasions was tournament director for the New York Chess Association. Internationally renowned as a referee, Mr. Sim was designated World International referee in recognition of his preeminence among chess experts in the Western Hemisphere.
Mr. Sim became chess editor of The Telegram in 1922 and wrote a weekly column on chess problems until he was taken ill last Saturday.
A bachelor, Mr. Sim leaves a brother, Frank, of Ottawa, and a sister Mrs. Harry Smith of Angus.
