EXPERT CHESS PLAYERS TO STAGE TOURNAMENT
Rockingham, Aug. 5.—A group of expert chess players from Winston will come to Rockingham Friday morning to engage the local chess fans in the international pastime. The games will be played in the spacious rooms of the Richmond Club and will begin at 10:30 o'clock. Representing Winston will be Rev. E. A. Holton, Dr. R. H. Jones, Professor Shields, R. S. Galloway, John Q. Holton. The players for Rockingham will be Dr. A. B. McCreary, A. M. McNair, Rev. C. M. Hawkins, H. S. Ledbetter and either W. G. Pittman or John Scales.

Winston-Salem, Dec 29.—(AP)—Rev. Edgar A. Holton was last night elected president of the North Carolina Chess Society which opened its annual tournament at the Y M C A here this morning.
Chess players from all sections of the State are expected to enter the tournament.

Rev. Holton Takes Chess Tournament
RALEIGH. Dec 31. (AP)—The annual North Carolina chess tournament, completed here today was won by Rev. E. A. Holton of Winston-Salem. Rev. M. Holton was held to a draw in three games but was unbeaten in his seven other contests.
Dr. B. K. Hayes, of Oxford, was runner-up for first place. L. A Gardner, State College instructor, won last year's tournament and became State champion. Under rules of the association the champion can lose his title only in match play and so the instructor, who was absent from the city during the tourney remains state title holder.
