Chess Russians just in time
Two Russian chess masters Victor Korchnoi, 23, and Mark Taimanov, 30, caused something of a panic among officials of the international chess congress at Hastings today by delaying their arrival until the last moment. They turned up only five minutes before the official “opening” luncheon at which Mr. Malik the Russian ambassador in London, was the guest of honour.
All eyes were on Korchnoi this afternoon for his game with the Spanish champion Jesus Dies del Corral. The Russians are favourites with the British champion Harry Golombek and 20-year-old Fridrik Olafsson from Iceland, among their most likely challengers.
The Congress is the “youngest ever.” Average age of players in the Premier tournament is only 24.
