We announce with deepest sorrow and regret the death of John Welsh Young, of this city, in the 74th year of his age. For over 50 years he was one of the Editor's warmest friends. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep, the result probably of a blood clot. He was the grandson of the late John Welsh, United States Minister to Great Britain, who was the moving spirit in the great Continental Exposition held in this city in 1876.
John Welsh Young was well known as a grower of roses at Enfield, Pa., and also was an expert chess player, having participated in many championship matches. He was also one of the active members of a coterie of strong young chess players formed about 40 years ago, known as the Junior Chess Club. Nearly all its members were then also members of the Franklin Chess Club.
When we were called out of the city Mr. Young on two or three occasions wrote the leading chess article of this column.
