Chertkof Wins SJ Amateur Chess Tourney
The annual South Jersey Amateur Chess Tournament, held at the Plaza Motor Hotel, was won by Arnold Chertkof, of Philadelphia.
Chertkof and three other players scored five points in the six rounds, and he emerged as winner after tie-breaking procedure. Second was Howard Ant of New York City; third was George Proll of Trenton.
George Cake, a member of the Woodbury Chess Club, was named South Jersey amateur champion as the highest scoring South Jersey Chess Association member. His five points also secured the trophy for A division winner.
Other prize winners were: B division, Robert Donaldson, Toms River; C division, Tom Denny, Toms River; D division, Gene Artis, Beverly; woman, Mrs. Mildred Morrell, Somerdale; junior, T. Strauch, Philadelphia.
The tournament, which attracted 40 players, was directed by Dr. Henry Matty of Stratford.
