Philippines Chess Victories
Melbourne, Sunday.—Philippines had a field day in the fourth round of the Australian chess championship yesterday.
They scored three wins from the New South Wales players, including two former national title-holders.
Their hero was the 19-year-old R. Cardoso, who defeated the international master, C. J. S. Purdy, in a beautifully played game.
A. Koshnitsky lost a piece quite early to F. Campomanes. His attempts to complicate the position were effectively refuted by his opponent.
The third Philippines win was also at the expense of New South Wales, J. Pascual defeating J. Szewczyk.
The title-holder, John Purdy, added to New South Wales misfortunes by losing to L. Endzelins (S.A.) in the best game of the round.
The two Victorians, L. Awdiew and J. N. Hanks, played a well-contested draw, Awdiew thus retaining his half-point lead over the rest of the field.
The New Zealand champion, O. Sarapu, atoned for his third-round loss by effectively defeating E. Basta (Vic).
Other result: O. Weber (Tas.) beat F. A. Crawl (Vic); S. Lazare (Vic.) beat W. Leonhardt (W.A.);
J. Shmeleff (N.S.W.) beat Dr. A. Learner (Vic.);
the games, M. Kuzelansky (W'land), R. G. Ely (N.S.W.) and P. Ihnatenko (Vic.),
V. A. Teters were drawn; the game, Dr. P. Kalinouseky (S.A.), V. K. Ozols, (Vic.), was adjourned after two sessions of play.
