MR. EUGENE DELMAR.
With reference to the death of Eugene Delmar, announced in The Times of yesterday, a correspondent writes:-
Eugene Delmar was born in New York on September 12, 1841, and, has always been closely associated with chess in America. For many years a prominent member of the well-known Manhattan Chess Club of New York, he took part in most of their principal tournaments, generally with a fair measure of success. He will be best remembered by chess players in England from his participation in the Anglo-American cable matches. He played in the first of these contests in 1896 at board No. 7, drawing against Mr. H. E. Atkins, the present British champion, and also played in 1897, 1898, 1900, 1902, 1903, and 1908, when he was higher on the list, his opponent on this side being Mr. G. W. Richmond at board No. 4. This game was one of the two left over for adjudication and finally decided as a draw. Taking altogether the seven occasions on which he appeared he had a score of 3½ points, a fair average record. The only important tournament of recent years in which he played was the celebrated one at Cambridge Springs, U.S.A., in 1904, when he had to be content with the modest score of 4½ points. In simultaneous play he was great enthusiast, and had many good performances to his credit. He was 67 years of age at his death.
