1949, Chess Event Is Scheduled at San Jose

Chess Event Is Scheduled at San Jose Chess players and fans from San Bruno to Salinas will converge on San Jose Oct. 15 and 16 for a two-day tourney to determine the peninsula area champion.
Sponsors of the event are the San Jose “Y” Chess club and the San Jose chamber of commerce. Play will start at the Civic Auditorium at noon sharp Oct. 15. In charge as tourney director will be George Koltanowski, world champion blindfold player and former champion of Belgium, now a resident in Santa Rosa.
Assisting Mr. Koltanowski will be George Van Hooser of Sunnyvale, who reports early entries from such well-known peninsula chess addicts as Prof. Lyman H. Daugherty of San Jose State college; Edwin T. Dana, Palo Alto; George Oakes, Salinas; Dr. J. M. David-Malig, San Jose; Howard Skinner, Hollister; Anton H. Kiviaho and Ruben T. Sanderson, both of Redwood City, and W. T. Adams, recent winner of the Santa Clara county championship.
It is expected that the entry list will be kept open until one hour before the actual start of play. However, the host organizations urge that wherever possible, entries be mailed now. Write either George Koltanowski, Box 124, Santa Rosa, or W. T. Adams, Box 1104, San Jose.

Chess wizard wins 20 games in matches here
Playing 21 opponents simultaneously, Chess Master George Koltanowski won 20 games and lost one in exhibition matches yesterday in the garden of the E. E. Dana home. Prof. Lyman Daugherty of San Jose State was the lone winner.
Before the 21-game match Koltanowski defeated two opponents, Bill Adams of San Jose and Ted Dana of Palo Alto, in “rapid transit blindfold chess” In these games Koltanowski played with his back to the board and with the moves called out to him. Only 10 seconds were allowed for each move.
Tomorrow he will give a lecture-demonstration of memory before the Kiwanis Club in Los Gatos. In the evening he will play another simultaneous chess match at the Los Gatos Chess Club.
Yesterday's exhibition was sponsored by the Palo Alto Chess Club of the Palo Alto Recreation Department.

Lyman H. Daugherty To Play Chess Expert
When Weaver W. Adams, chess champ of Massachusetts and ninth place winner in the last U.S. Open championship tourney comes to San Jose, Saturday, on hand with three other local players to play him simultaneously will be Lyman H. Daugherty of Los Gatos.
The event will be held at the San Jose YMCA building at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday. All interested are invited to attend.

1959, California State Chess Federation Officials Election

Philip Smith of Fresno Heads State Chess Unit
Philip D. Smith of Fresno is the new president of the California State Chess Federation.
Smith, a Fresno City College teacher, was elected to succeed Henry Gross of San Francisco at the business meeting of the federation held here yesterday in connection with the 26th annual north-south match.
The north team won the match 37 to 33. The result brings the standings to 16 victories for the north, seven for the south and three ties.
In the rapid transit match, Earl Pruner of San Francisco won the title from Irving Rivise of Los Angeles who last year won it from Pruner. Pruner won six matches and lost one in this year's event.
Others Place
J. Lazos of Los Angeles was second with 5-2 and Gilbert Ramirez of San Francisco and Ronald Gross of Long Beach tied for third with 4½-2½.
The other officers of the federation are: Ralph Hagedorn of Sun Valley, Los Angeles County, vice president; Silencer H. Van Gelder, San Francisco, secretary; Dr. Ralph Hultgren, Berkeley, treasurer.

The directors of the federation are: Lyman Daugherty of San Jose, chairman; A. L. Raymond of Lancaster, Los Angeles County; Guthrie McClain of Berkeley, Rivise, Isaac Kashdan of Los Angeles, Gunnar Rasmusser of Vallejo, Solano County; John Alexander of San Diego, Larry Zipfel of Redding, Shasta County; George B. Oakes of Salinas, Monterey County, and Charles B. Walker of Riverside.
Smith said the Fresno Chess Club is seeking to have the California Open Chess Tournament played in Fresno on the Labor Day Weekend.

Lyman H. Daugherty
College professor
BRIDGEPORT — Lyman Harry Daugherty of Bridgeport died Monday at a Bridgeport hospital. He was 95.
Mr. Daugherty was born in Robinson, Illinois and had lived in Bridgeport for eight years. He was a retired college professor. Mr Daugherty served in the Army during World War I.
Survivors: Wife, Josephine Daugherty of Bridgeport; one daughter Sue Tackel of Bridgeport; and one granddaughter, Diane Tackel of Bridgeport.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
