Our choice this week is taken from the recent Springfield Hartford match. Charles Henin, playing for Springfield, is 14 years-old-high school student. He played well until the latter part of the game, when greater experience won out. His opponent played for many years in Providence before coming to this city.

Chicago Chess Player Wins State Tourney
Peoria, Ill., Sept. 6 (AP)—A University of Chicago senior, Charles C. Henin, 19, today won the Illinois state chess tournament. He posted nine straight victories in the three day tourneys. Forty-three players competed.

Charles Henin Dies
Former California chess champion Charles C. Henin of Los Angeles died last week at the untimely age of 36. He was a frequent participant in open and club tournaments, with consistently good scores.
Henin was co-holder with Dennis Fritzinger of Redwood City in the 1971 state championship. He did not defend the title in the tournament early in January.
Henin left a wife, Terry Elizabeth, two children, Eva, 8 and Anthony Eric, 5, and a sister, Mrs. Shirley Elliott of Bethesda, Md.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
