Look At The Chess Club
The Quiet Players Around the Table. Some of the Men of Knights and Bishops
Where They Meet and How They Enjoy the Games.
Quiet as it is kept, Springfield has a number of expert chess players. They are not professionals either, but simply amateurs, who delight in the scientific moves on the miniature battlefield. Almost any day and especially if it be a rainy day, when the lowering clouds and the pattering drops on the roof and window panes, drive people indoors on such days as this can be seen gathered around three or four tables the devotees of this most scientific of all games. Where do they meet? You ascend the stairway in D. C. Dade's building on College street, and traverse long corridors and go through room after room till you come to the extreme rear of the building, and as you approach the half open door you will hear the click of the knights and bishops as they change their places on the tables
[…]
At one table may be seen the Rev. Mr. Morrill, of the Episcopal church, who is the Napoleon or rather the Grant of this arena, for he plays better when he smokes; like Grant he has but little to say and like the great Sphinx he most always wins victories. Across the table from him may be seen D. C. Dade, or James Houston, or Elbert Grabill, while Messers Hawkins, Updegraff, Ahern and others will be grouped around the other tables as players or deeply interested spectators.

Chess

Springfield Leader and Press, Springfield, Missouri, Wednesday, August 04, 1897

The Carthage Democrat has the following to say about one of Springfield's musicians: Prof. L. E. Robinson returned Sunday from Springfield. While there Mr. Robinson saw Prof. E. W. Grabill, late of Berlin where he studied music under the celebrated Barth. Mr. Robinson made Mr. Grabill a proposition and he came to Carthage to look over the ground with a view of accepting a position in the normal and fitting school. Mr. Grabill is favorably impressed with Carthage and may decide to locate here. He is a musician of high attainments and it is to be hoped that Mr. Robinson will be able to secure him.

'til the world understands why Robert J. Fischer criticised the U.S./British and Russian military industry imperial alliance and their own Israeli Apartheid. Sarah Wilkinson explains:

Bobby Fischer, First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
What a sad story Fischer was,” typed a racist, pro-imperialist colonial troll who supports mega-corporation entities over human rights, police state policies & white supremacy.
To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”. I think Mr. Fischer held out and fought the good fight, steadfast til the day he died, and may he Rest In Peace.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
