Gutierrez Wins Great Game of Chess at “Y”
I. A. Gutierrez and F. H. Seaman last night played one of the best games of chess ever seen locally. The game was played in the “Y” game room.
The two players met in the Y.M.C.A. chess championship schedule and battled for several hours before a decision was reached. All through the game the tide of favor swayed from one to the other.
Gutierrez was the final winner through several beautiful moves during the last moments of play.
The game was of especial interest to the bystanders as its result will have much to do with the first round of the tournament schedule. As a result of the game, Gutierrez now leads the long string of players with a total of 12½ points.
There were a number of good games in the tournament last night but the Gutierrez-Seaman match overtopped them all for closeness of play and real scientific gamework.
The last was a feature that made the interest bearing match so interesting. The two contestants are known in “Y” circles to be about the best around the local institution and their clash was watched with a great deal of interest by a number of chess fans.
The game was of the kind that one sees but once in a lifetime.
The matches are all running off nicely with the exception of several bottom contestants who have lost a few games and then quit attending.
The refereeing is being taken care of in a highly creditable manner by H. H. Ellzey, who is giving satisfaction to all through his just decisions as head of the referees of all games.
Following are the official standings of the contestants, including all games played to date.

Evans Gambit by Mail.
More than the average amount of nerve is required in order to indulge in an Evans Gambit by mail, and the player who has the courage of his convictions deserves to win, if he encounters any sort of resistance. Such a player, who will pin his faith to this beautiful, albeit risky, opening, is I. A. Gutierrez of El Paso, Tex., as will appear from the following game won by him from H. C. Davis in the 365th tourney of the Correspondence Chess League of America.

JITNE DRIVER IS CHAMPION CHESS PLAYER
El Paso has a chess club but the members have been so busy playing that they have not been able to take off enough time to perfect formal organization. They meet every evening at the central Y. M. C. A. and play until the lights go out.
I. A. Gutierrez, who formerly was a member of the El Paso police force and at one time operated a jitne, is conceded to be the city’s foremost player. He is the author of a highly technical book, on the ancient game.
F. H. Seamon runs Gutierrez a close second, according to the rank and file of the players, and R. W. Gossett is a good third, styling himself “an understudy of Gutierrz and Seamon.” Other constant players are W. H. Seamon, Frank Scott, J. Porter Bender and Jake Weinzeimer.
“I can safely say that El Paso has a bunch of first class chess players, and we would be ready to meet in a tournament any of the professionals that travel about the country for match games,” said Mr. Gossett.

'til the world understands why Robert J. Fischer criticised the U.S./British and Russian military industry imperial alliance and their own Israeli Apartheid. Sarah Wilkinson explains:

Bobby Fischer, First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
What a sad story Fischer was,” typed a racist, pro-imperialist colonial troll who supports mega-corporation entities over human rights, police state policies & white supremacy.
To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”. I think Mr. Fischer held out and fought the good fight, steadfast til the day he died, and may he Rest In Peace.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
