James Narraway Dies Soon After 90th Birthday
James Ephraim Narraway, at one time North American chess champion, eminent paleontologist whose collections are now housed in the Royal Ontario Museum at Toronto and in the British Museum at London, England, and a member of the Civil Service in the Department of Justice for 45 years, died suddenly at his home, 197 Second avenue, early Monday morning.
The prominent nonagenarian had celebrated his 90th birthday last Wednesday at which time he was participating in an international chess tournament by correspondence.
His brilliant playing in chess tournaments won him two Canadian championships. In 1897 he won the championship at Orillia and in the following year at Toronto successfully defended his title. A member of the Correspondence Chess League of America where he was classified as “one of the big ten in the AA class,” he placed several times as champion of North America in correspondence tournaments.
Two important paleontological discoveries he made were accepted for display at the Royal Ontario Museum and the British Museum at London. Searching among the rock formations on the banks of the Ottawa River. M. Narraway in 1924 discovered an early form of trilobite which he dispatched for study to England and in the same area in 1930 he found a strange star fish formation which threw new light on the study of prehistoric life and was sent by Mr. Narraway to the Toronto Museum. Both at London and at Toronto his discoveries bear his name.
In C.S. 45 Years
Mr. Narraway had been a member of the Civil Service for 45 years. In 1887, after serving as manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia at Moncton and Campbellton, N.B., he entered the Department of Justice where he was appointed chief accountant and registrar, retiring in June, 1932.
Resident of Ottawa for the past 60 years, he was born at Sackville, N.B., in 1857. son of the late Rev. James R. Narraway and Mary Close. In 1874 he graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a B.A. degree. His marriage to the former Ella Medill Maxwell took place at St. John, N.B., in September, 1882. Mrs. Narraway passed away in 1933. He was a member of St. James United church.
Surviving are four sons, Charles A. and Athos M., Ottawa. H. R. Narraway, Calgary, Alta., C. B. Narraway, Stanstead. Que.; and two sisters Mrs. Frank W. Nicholson, widow of the late president of Wesleyan University, Middletown. Conn., Mrs. W. H. Fairall, Montclair. N.J. Two other sons, H. S. and L. W. Narraway, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Sandford, died some time ago.
Rev. J. Richmond Craig, minister of St. James United church, will conduct the service in the chapel of Hulse and Playfair Limited, 315 McLeod street, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial will be at Beechwood cemetery.

His brilliant playing in chess tournaments won him two Canadian championships, and on his 90th birthday last week he was participating in an internal chess tournament by correspondence.
