“…Mr. Collins was best known as Bobby Fischer's teacher, but he was not entirely comfortable with the label. In his book, Mr. Collins said that he had ‘imparted knowledge’ to Mr. Fischer, but that his ability was something that could not be taught.
He wrote, ‘Geniuses like Beethoven, Leonardo da Vinci, Shakespeare and Fischer come out of the head of Zeus, seem to be genetically programmed, know before instructed.’”
New York Times, John W. Collins, 89, Dies; Was Fischer's Chess Tutor
The assertion by William Lombardy in Understanding Chess: My System, My Games, My Life (2011) is summed up in the following paraphrase: Fischer was not taught by Jack Collins. Because of Collins' comparably inferior playing ability, Collins was only able to share 'trivial knowledge' with Fischer and Lombardy who ranked as 'superior masters' to Collins. Lombardy personally directed Fischer's actions. 'I was Bobby's only chess instructor starting at age 11 and continuing until Reykjavik. Although some people might not enjoy hearing this shocking news, I believe they will eventually adjust.'
