Lawrence Ascher Rosenblatt, Chess Champion

The Mechanics Institute Chess and Checker Club of San Francisco, which flourished before the earthquake, has been reorganized. The annual tournament for the gold medal was duly revived, and in a field of eighteen players, Dr. Henry Epstein proved the winner, while A. Ferrague and Dr Legler, second and third respectively. The brilliancy prize was won by Lawrence A. Rosenblatt for his game against Dr. Sternberg, on the award of Dr. W. R. Lovegrove.

The Good Companion solving tournament held yesterday (Washington's Birthday) at the L. A. Chess club entertained a large crowd. Donald Mugridge, 16-year-old expert, won first prize and L. A. Rosenblatt won second prize.

Private services were held here yesterday for Laurence A. Rosenblatt, uncle of Martin Rosenblatt, vice president of the S. and G. Gump Company.
Mr. Rosenblatt, an accountant, died Friday from a stroke. he was 64. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eva Rosenblatt of 3555 Broderick Street; two daughters, Mrs. Maxwell Simpson of Napa and Mrs. W. Thomsen Kiernan of San Francisco; a sister, Mrs. Alfred Gump, and a brother, Arthur Rosenblatt of San Francisco.
The services were conducted at the mortuary of Halsted & Company.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
