SIR GEORGE THOMAS
Sir George Alan Thomas the grand old man of British chess has died. He was 91.
Playing regularly for Britain for many years from 1910 and acting as captain from 1930 he was British champion in 1923 and 1934. He was equal first (with Euwe and Flohr above Capablanca and Botvinnik) at Hastings at Christmas, 1934.
He also excelled at badminton and lawn tennis. He was All England badminton champion singles, 1920-23 and won the doubles nine times. From 1934 to 1955 he was president of the International Badminton Federation.
Educated at Wellington, he succeeded his father as the seventh baronet in 1918. There is no heir to the title.
