SEBASTOPOL — Russian-born David William Bogdanoff, a carpenter who following retirement indulged his fascination with growing hydroponic vegetables and flowers, died on April 28. He was 80.
Bogdanoff came to the United States from Russia when he was 1 year old. He made his home in Sonoma County more than 20 years ago. He returned to Russia in 1981 in an effort to locate relatives.
He had worked as a carpenter, and was a member of the Carpenters Union. In recent years he tended to his elaborate hydroponic garden, in which plants flourished in water, nutrients and gravel rather than in soil.
His gardening interest included a family orchard, mostly Gravenstein apples, peaches and grapes. His hydroponic interest was to provide vegetables year-round.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Bogdanoff, Sebastopol; by his sons, David A. Bogdanoff, Sebastopol, and Gregory P. Bogdanoff, Walnut Creek; three brothers, a sister and five grandchildren. Services have been held at the Russian Sectarian Cemetery in Colma.
