Sixteen Year Old Patrick Bennett, of Newport, Welsh joint boys' champion and Monmouthshire under-18 champion, made a good start in his bid for the British boys' under-18 championship at the British Chess Federation Congress at Leamington Spa yesterday.
In the opening round of the contest he beat J. R. Davies (Leamington) in 36 moves. In the same event Cohn Bloodworth, 17,of Pontypridd, who was joint under-18 champion of Wales last year, lost to V. H. Woodward (Leicester) in 22 moves.
Richard Jones, secretary of Aberdare Grammar School Chess Club and joint Welsh under-15 boy champion, was unsuccessful in the first round of the British Boys' Under-15 Championship. He was defeated in 46 moves by J. T. Fahy (Luton).
In the first-class tournament, J. Taynton Evans, a Newport solicitor, and secretary of the Newport and County Chess Club, drew against A. Archer (Stoke) in 21 moves. W. H. Thomas (Newport) lost to K. G. Gunnell (Richmond. Surrey) in 28 moves.
