CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex., Aug. 6.—(AP)—B. C. Jenkines of Gary, Ind., defeated Conrad P. Hoover of Corpus Christi yesterday in a match in the 48th annual U. S. open chess tournament. Jenkines needed 39 moves for his victory.

August 28, 1947: Former Local Man Participates In National Tourney, Judge B. C. Jenkines of Gary, formerly of this city, was defeated by A. A. Murray of Dallas, Tex., in sixty-three moves in the final round of the United States Open Chess tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to word received here Thursday by John A. Geyer.
Judge Jenkines, a former Indiana chess champion, received a total of 5½ points in the national tournament, which lasted two weeks.
The winner of the tournament was Isaac Kashdan of New York City, with 11½ points. He received a cash award of $1000.
