Leonia Chess Club To Meet Rice Chess Club
Arrangements were completed today for a match between the Leonia Chess club and a picked team from the Rice Chess club of Newark at the Leonia Bank Building on Saturday afternoon.
J. W. Brunnemer, of Westwood, Warren G. Findley, of Leonia, William J. Bryan, of Union City, William E. De Bary, of Leonia, A. D. Del Mar, of Englewood, and D. Reviro, of Bogota, will play in the order named for Leonia, with George R. Denton, of Union City, as alternate.

1929, John William Brunnemer, Chess Simultaneous Exhibition

The Montclair Times, Montclair, New Jersey, Saturday, June 08, 1929

Another outstanding event of the year, was the simultaneous exhibition by Mr. Brunnemer, the present state champion. Mr. Brunnemer played eighteen boards at once and covered himself with glory as the score shows. He won twelve games, drew five and lost but one and that to one of the masters of the club, W. N. Witt.

Leonia Chess Players Were First And Second
In connection with the International Chess Congress, held at Bradley Beach, a New Jersey chess tournament was held, with the result that members of the Leonia Chess club won first and second prizes.
They were J. W. Brunnemer, who was awarded first place and W. J. Bryan, who received second honors.
The players held their contest at the Hotel La Reine. George Denton of the Leonia Chess club arranged the tournament. William De Bary, of Leonia, was present to watch the players, but did not take part in the tournament.


June 16 1929

1929, John William Brunnemer, New Jersey State Chess Championship Tournament at Bradley Beach

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati, Ohio, Sunday, June 16, 1929

In connection with the tournament at Bradley Beach, N. J., fans of that state are conducting a tournament to determine who shall wear the New Jersey chess crown for 1929. This is the first state tournament held since 1929 and its revival this year is largely due to the efforts of George R. Denton and George P. Northrop, the latter being chess editor of the Newark Evening News. Play is under the direction of Dr. Norbert L. Lederer, tournament director of the National Chess Federation, with George Denton acting as assistant director. The contestants for the New Jersey state championship are J. W. Brunnemer, David Gottfried, Joseph Gorewitz, Clinton Parmelee, Joseph Gorewitz, W. J. Bryan and A. N. Towsen.

J. W. Brunnemer is again the New Jersey state champion, for he triumphed for the fifth consecutive time in the tournament conducted at Bradley Deach. N. J., in conjunction with the masters' tournament. The standing of the players in the Jersey State tournament follows:

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.

The photograph of Bobby Fischer (above) from the March 02, 1956 The Tampa Times was discovered by Sharon Mooney (Bobby Fischer Newspaper Archive editor) on February 01, 2018 while gathering research materials for this ongoing newspaper archive project. Along with lost games now being translated into Algebraic notation and extractions from over two centuries of newspapers, it is but one of the many lost treasures to be found in the pages of old newspapers since our social media presence was first established November 11, 2017.
