Gentlemen, the Evans Gambit is coming to the front! Have you not noticed the increasing frequency of its adoption, not only in off-hand play but in games of consequence? Our attention was first drawn to this re-action by the large proportionate number of Evans which we found were getting into our columns, and that without the least predilection on our own part for this opening—indeed, we have hitherto favored the defense and regarded the attack as thoroughly rotten. Apropos of this impending renaissance are the following comments of the Commercial Gazette:
“Mr. Gansberg considers the Evans attack a dangerous and formidable one to meet. He recalls the fact that both in the Vienna and London congresses Steinitz defended the Evans against Tschigorin and lost both games. No one is more familiar with analysis than Zukertort, but he declined an Evans gambit offered by Tschigorin.”
