A commencement of the hostilities between England and Russia may be regarded as imminent, though there is reason to believe that the sacrifice of life and treasure resulting therefrom will be less than was apprehended a few months since. A challenge from M. Tschigorin on behalf of the St. Petersburg Chess Club to play for 100 guineas a side has been favourably considered by the committee of the British Chess Club, who, however, will endeavour to arrange the match without a money stake. Mr. Hoffer has been deputed to carry on negotiations for the London club, and it is probable that an exciting contest will take place.
