FOR THE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
Steinitz and the Famous Russian, Tschigorin, to Play Twenty Games at Havana.
New York, Nov. 12. The chess amateurs of Havana, Cuba, for several years past have annually arranged visit of great professional masters, like Steinitz and Mackenzie, to their city. For the coming season they have organized a contest between Mr. Steinitz, the champion of the world, and the famous Russian player, M. Tschigorin, the winner of the best of twenty games to be declared the victor, and the contests will commence at Havana during the second week of next January.
The stakes are to be $600 a side, and there will be separate prizes which, as well as fees and expenses of both players, will be provided by the club De Ajedrez (the chess club) of Havana.
Negotiations for the purpose of settling this contest have been pending for some time, but Mr. Steinitz received on Saturday last a cablegram from M. Tschigorin of St. Petersburg, signifying the consent of the latter gentleman to the terms of the engagement proposed by the Havana Chess Club, which had already been accepted by Mr. Steinitz.
