CLARKE IN TRIPLE TIE.
Ernest J. Clarke, former champion of the Queens County Chess Club, of Richmond Hill, L. I., has just figured in a triple tie in an invitation prize winners tournament at the Mechanics Institute Chess Club of San Francisco, in which seven others competed. Tied with Clarke, at 4½ to 2½, were George Hallwegen and A. J. Fink, a well-known problem composer. Clarke lost only one game to Gerald Branch of the University of California, former chess champion of Edinburgh University, Scotland. In addition, he drew three other games. In the playoff between the three leaders, another triple tie ensued, after which the prize money was divided.
