Chess Wizards To Make Royalty Hop by Telegraph
Kings, queens and bishops will hop about with great acceleration in San Francisco and Los Angeles on Memorial Day, May 30, when the Mechanics Institute chess club clashes over the telegraph wire with the Los Angeles chess club for the championship of the Pacific coast.
Composed of physicians, lawyers, business men, college professors and several players of national reputation, the San Francisco chess team is brushing up for the match, which will start at 9 o'clock in the morning and finish some time in the evening.
A large crowd of “rooters” will be on hand here to see the following men in action: Adolph J. Fink, W. J. Dickinson, W. Smith, Elmer Gruer, Bernardo Smith (captain), Dr. W. R. Lovegrove, Dr. William Haber, A. Stamer, B. Rosenblatt, J. O. Chilton, Dr. Abelsori Epsteen, Will Tevis Jr., Fritz Huber, Prof. W. Ryder, University of California; Wallace Neville, Carl Barkhaus and Prof. Gerald Branch, University of California.
