Checker Club For Berkeley
On the opening night of the newly formed Oakland Chess and Checker Club, whose headquarters have been established at 409 Fifteenth street Dr. G. E. K. Branch of the University of California will play simultaneously as many players as wish to compete, according to G. P. Keyes, manager of the club.
Doctor Branch, a noted chess expert has appeared in many chess tournaments. Any chess player who wishes may bring his own set Saturday night, when the headquarters will be opened, and enter the contest against Doctor Branch.
The following have been elected as officers of the club: Doctor Branch, president; S. S. Herrick, vice president; W. P. Barlow, secretary-treasurer, and Keyes, manager.
The following have been selected as directors of the club: James F. Galliano, J. A. Drouillard, R. F. Shaw, J. P. A. Greenwood, John Almond, Dr. Jefferson Citron, Curtis L. Wilson, J. P. Smith, C. C. Childress, P. C. Nahl and Hugo Legler.
During the past week, 120 members have joined the club, and it is hoped that the membership will soon reach 300. Invitations to join the club have been extended by Doctor Branch to all chess and checker enthusiasts.
