Chess.
The Champion Practicing.
In order to obtain practice as a preparation for his visit to the forthcoming western championship tournament at Excelsior, Lake Minitonka, Magnus Smith, Canadian champion, is engaged in a short match of five up with Charles Blake, secretary of the Winnipeg chess club. Some interesting games have resulted, the score at present standing Smith 4, Blake 3, drawn 1. The play has been of a keener and more “chessy” nature than in the match contested last November between these players, which it may be remembered was won by Smith by the score of 7 to 4, with one drawn game.

SMITH PULLS AWAY.
Adds Another Victory to His String In Match With Blake.
Magnus M. Smith increased his lead in the series with Charles Blake when he won after a well played game on Saturday night. The series now stands, Smith won five, lost three and drawn one; Blake won three, lost five and drawn one. The series closes with the player first recording seven wins. Blake resigned at the 29th move. They will meet again tonight.
The Winnipeg Chess club meets tonight to decide in sending a representative to defend the cup at the Canadian Congress at Montreal in January. Word has been received that the St. Paul Chess and Whist club has declined to accept the challenge of the Winnipeg Chess club, to contest a chess match of ten tables on New Year's Day. The Flour City Chess club may take the matter up.
