State Championship, Held by Angeleno, at Stake Here During 10 Days of International Play
Wizards of chess intricacies; will begin an international chess congress in Los Angeles today.
It will start at 7 p.m. in Hollywood Chess Group's rooms, 108 N. Formosa Ave., and will run to midnight. The tournament will continue during those hours for 10 days with the exception that the playing on Saturday and Sunday will be from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.
CROWN AT STAKE
Principally at stake is the California State championship held by Harry Borochow of Los Angeles. Nine players will test his right to hold the title for another year.
Among the challengers is A. J. Fink of San Francisco, three-time State champion, who hopes to regain the crown.
MASTERS TO PLAY
As special features of the contest, two international masters will play in the tournament but if they win they cannot acquire the State title. They are George Koltanowski of Antwerp, who came here from Belgium especially for the congress, and Herman Steiner of Los Angeles, three times a member of the United States team that captured the international series from championship. Steiner is chess expert for The Times.
PLAYED 34 GAMES
Koltanowski's feats included that of playing 31 games simultaneously and winning them all completely blindfolded all the while. He did this at Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1937, winning for himself the title of world blindfold champion in chess circles. Some of Hollywood's cinema celebrities are chess fans and are to take part in the congress.

By defeating seven of the nation's leading chess players in a row, Reuben Fine. New York city, seated, won the United States Chess Federation master tournament held in Dallas, Tex. Looking over the national champion's shoulder is Herman Steiner, Pacific coast champion whom Mr. Fine defeated in a four-hour match.
