Asylum Granted Hungarian Star
Washington, Oct 16 (AP)—Paul Benko a chess star who defected from Communist Hungary has been granted asylum in the United States.
The State department said Wednesday that Benko decided not to return to Hungary after participating in an international student chess tournament in Iceland last summer. When the other members of the Hungarian team left Iceland July 28 Benko refused to do so and was given temporary asylum by the Icelandic government.
His father Pal Benko lives in this country, at Barberton, Ohio, and Benko asked the embassy in Iceland for permission to migrate here and join him.
