Woman Chess Champion
EX-CHILD prodigy and British chess champion at the age of 13, Miss Elaine Saunders, now only 17, was personality No. 1 at the Leicestershire Notts county chess match at Leicester.
Notts, played her at top board and the spectators saw flashes of the chess brilliance that has carried her so far among players of her own sex. She was opposed by Leicestershire's latest chess champion C. W. Horsey whose greater experience finally carried the day.
Miss Saunders' name first came before the general public in 1937, when at the age of 11, she held out for four hours against world-champion Alekhine in a simultaneous display.
At the British Chess Congress at Bournemouth, two years later, she became British and British lady champion, winning all her games. She still holds the title.
Notts, are fortunate in-as-much that Miss Saunders who is reading for an Arts degree at Nottingham University will be available for county games for some time to come.
By the way, J. Mieses the veteran chess master is visiting Leicester at the week-end He will play 30 members of the Leicestershire Club at Church House on Saturday (2 p.m.), and a display at Southfields Community Centre on Sunday.
