Dr. Lasker Retires Long Chess Expert
Dr. Emanuel Lasker of Berlin, who held the chess championship of the world for 27 years, from 1894 to 1921, has decided to retire and refrain from further participation in matches and tournaments, according to a letter received from him by a friend in New York City. He recently celebrated his 63rd birthday.
Dr. Lasker acquired his world title by defeating the late Wilhelm Steinitz, whom he conquered a second time three years later. Subsequently, Dr. Tarrasch, Janowski, Marshall and Schlechter tried in vain to wrest supremacy from him. At last, in 1921, Jose R. Capablanca, Cuban champion, defeated him in a match at Havana.
