Two Share lead In Chess Tourney
Gene Shapiro of Roswell and E. E. Thurston of Sandia Base shared the lead in the annual New Mexico Open Chess Tournament at the end of the third round Sunday afternoon as the meet went into its final sessions.
Shapiro, defending champion finished the first three rounds undefeated.
Tom Doyen of Albuquerque led the race for the junior cup and title at the end of round three.
Other players in the top bracket in the senior division Sunday were Warren Miller of Albuquerque, a city champ, Max Burkett of Carlsbad, Dr. R. S. Underwood of Lubbock and Gordon Charlton of Las Vegas.
The tournament will wind up today at the YMCA. Nineteen players from New Mexico and Texas are competing.

Roswell's Shapiro Wins 2nd Straight Chess Title CAPTION: Top Chessmen: Gene Shapiro (right) of Roswell successfully defended his title as New Mexico chess champion in a two-day tournament here over the Labor Day week end. Defending State chess champion Gene Shapiro of Roswell successfully retained his title Monday afternoon by winning the annual New Mexico Open Chess Tournament held at the YMCA.Shapiro, a Walker Air Force Base serviceman, won five games and drew one in the six-round competition. Nineteen players from Texas and New Mexico were entered in the two-day meet.
Jack Shaw of Albuquerque, present city champion, finished second. He won four matches, drew one and lost one. Third was Hall Jones of Sandia Base. Albert Harle of Albuquerque finished fourth.
Richard Lepp, 18, of Albuquerque, won the Junior State Title. Max Burkett of Carlsbad, last year's junior champ, was runnerup.
Going into the final rounds Monday Shapiro shared the lead with E. E. Thurston of Sandia Base, who fell into the lower ratings in the late sessions. Shapiro drew his last game with third place winner Hall Jones.
The tournament was held under the sponsorship of the YMCA Chess Club.
