“I had the pleasure,” write Mr. P. W. Sergeant, “of spending a couple of hours the other day with the great record holder, Emanuel Lasker, 26 years' chess champion of the world.
“The Doctor looks well, and shows no signs of yielding the slightest advantage to the general adversary, 'Time.' It is with more regret, therefore, that one considers his fixed determination to abstain from the public practice of the game which has made his name famous in many countries.
“He can without difficulty be persuaded to discuss variations, and positions, and to give advice as to lines of play, but beyond that he will not go. As to the publication of the long-deferred book, to exhibit the best games of his career, he hopes that someone else will accomplish the task. As far as he is concerned, I fear the prospect of a publication is remote. Genius can never be compelled.”
