The New Mexico Open Chess Tournament for 1957 goes into its third and final day at the Hilton today and should finish with the 1957 state champion declared by about 6 p.m.
Leading the chess enthusiasts with four wins against no defeats is Col. B. E. Thurston, Albuquerque. One of the Colonel's games was declared for him because of a time limit ruling.
Warren Miller and Jack Shaw, both of Albuquerque, tied each other and won three other games Saturday and Sunday to share second place, with 3½ points.
Others who are not yet removed from competition include Ken Pullin, Albuquerque; Andrew Kraus, Boulder, Colo.; Tom Held, Albuquerque; Mark Wells, Los Alamos; Max Burkett, State College, all with three wins and one defeat.
Three more rounds remain to be played today.
