Shaw Leads Chess Tourney
The New Mexico champion and three junior players were in the ranks of early leaders of three-day Albuquerque Open Chess Tournament ending tomorrow at the Hilton Hotel.
Tournament Director Fred A. Driscoll Jr., said the three youths one from El Paso and two from Albuquerque were all under 18 years of age. Albuquerque champion Art Innis was unable to participate in the tourney, said Mr. Driscoll.
State Champion Jack Shaw of Albuquerque was holding a slight lead when the third round opened today at 1 pm in the Western Room at the Hilton. The fourth round is to be played this evening and the final two rounds are set for 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow.
Pushing Shaw for the tournament lead are Max Burkett from State College; John Freeman, El Paso, Dave Beckadorff, Tom Heldt and Warren Miller all of Albuquerque, said Driscoll.
Freeman, Beckadorff and Heldt, are under 18 and classed as juniors, he explained.
There are 24 players entered from El Paso, Las Vegas, Carlsbad, Amarillo and Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. Albuquerque YMCA Chess Club is tournament host.

Burges Youth Chess Winner
John Freeman, 16-year-old Burges High School student of 7401 Parkland Drive, took first place in the Albuquerque open chess tournament over the Memorial Day week end.
Freeman won four games and drew with Jack Shaw of Albuquerque and Max Burkett of State College, N. M., to finish, with a score of five to one. Shaw and Burkett finished second and third respectively.
Freeman is the current El Paso chess champion.
