Mr. Blackburne, the Eminent Chess player, in Derby.—On Tuesday evening, Mr. Blackburne, the celebrated blindfold chess-player, encountered “all-comers over the board” at the Christ Church Schoolroom. The contest had been brought about by the British Workman Chess Club, which numbers amongst its members several very excellent players. Twenty-seven competitors appeared to oppose Mr. Blackburne, and the games commenced at 6.30. Soon after eleven o'clock 25 were either beaten or had resigned, and only two were left in the field, namely, Mr. Hives, of Burton, and Mr. Robinson, of the same town. These two held out till about 12.30, the result being that Mr. Hives beat Mr. Blackburne. Mr. Robinson's game was drawn. The final consequences therefore are that Mr. Blackburne won 25 games, lost one, and drew one. To-night Mr. Blackburne encounters ten strong local players in the same room.
