Chess Genius of the North.
North-country chess players who form a numerous community will be deeply interested in the proposal to present an Empire testimonial to Mr. Joseph Henry Blackburne on his eightieth birthday. It is desired to raise a fund to which chess players throughout the Empire are being invited to contribute that will ensure the “grand old man of British chess,” as Mr. Blackburne is justly styled having, a sufficiency to spend his declining days in comfort.
Mr. Blackburne who was for so many years the British champion and foremost exponent of chess in the kingdom is a Manchester man by birth and education and like the late Sir John Thursby, another great chess player, is proud of his Lancashire associations.
