Joseph Henry Blackburne, England's strongest player until his death in 1924, made his livelihood in coffeehouses. When a client ordered a glass of whisky during a game, Blackburne quelled it while the guy was lost in thought. Blackburne later explained to astonished kibitzers why he won so quickly: “He left a glass of whiskey en prise. I took it en passant.”
