Mr. J. H. Blackburne at Torquay.
Mr. E. J. Winter-Wood, the President of the Torquay Chess Club, welcomed on Thursday, at the Chess Club's headquarters (Iredale's Library, Torquay), Mr. J. H. Blackburne, the veteran chess champion, who paid his last visit to Torquay a quarter of a century ago. Mr. Winter-Wood recalled some very pleasant recollections of Mr. Blackburne's visit to Plymouth, thirty years ago. Mr. Granville-Page, the capable hon. secretary of the club, made the arrangements and there was a very fair attendance. Mr. Blackburne played 24 games simultaneously players being drawn from the Torquay Newton, Paignton, and Torquay Y.M.C.A. Clubs. The latter's representatives did by far the best, Mr. C. W. King winning the only game against the champion, while three other members of the Y.M.C.A., Messrs. J. Denham Brown, W. H. Prust and G. H. Williams drew, while only Mr. C. Waterfall lost. Others who drew games were Rev. F. Campbell (Newton), Dr. Walker, Messrs. R. G. Drake, W. Ball, junr., B. P. Jelf-Reverley (Torquay Club). A. E. A. Elston (Newton) W. J. Bearne and E. Raymond (Paignton). Mr. Blackburne won thirteen games, viz., those with Mr. C. Greville Page, Rev. F. F. Buss, Preb. Wodehouse, Rev. Botterill. Mr. P. W. Peet, Dr. Walker, Dr. M. Jones, Mr. E. Sandys, Mr. A. M. Windeatt, Rev. B. Martin, Mr. G. H. Hearder, junr., Mr. E. Raymond, and Mr. W. J. Bearn.
